At Savannah River: Parsons Gets DOE Kudos for Work on Salt Waste Processing Facility

By Staff Reports

Parsons said April 8 the Salt Waste Processing Facility it is building at the Energy Department’s Savannah River Site near Aiken, S.C., received a Secretarial Department of Energy Award for Project Management Improvement on March 23.

The award cites the project team’s innovative practices, which “positioned the project for the completion of construction activities ahead of the target date and under the target cost,” Parsons said in a press release.

Parsons, based in Pasadena, Calif.,  is the prime contractor on the $2.3-billion Salt Waste Processing Facility, leading design, construction, and commissioning, and conducting the first year of operations. The facility will process radioactive waste stored in underground tanks at Savannah River. The facility is expected to be completed in April, then enter startup and commissioning, with an eye toward processing radioactive waste in late 2018, the company said in the release.
