Savannah River lab prime eyes minority institutions for EM research

By Staff Reports

The prime contractor for the Savannah River National Laboratory in South Carolina is inviting inquiries from “minority serving institutions” interested in helping carry out research for the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management.

Battelle Savannah River Alliance said in a March 11 notice on the federal procurement website (sam.gov) expressions of interest for such research should be submitted by 5 p.m. Eastern Time on March 25 to procurement representative Ellen Harrison, ellen.harrison@srnl.doe.gov.

Savannah River National Laboratory manages applied research and related work in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) supporting the Office of Environmental Management (EM) in areas including radioactive tank waste, facility deactivation and decommissioning, soil and groundwater remediation and artificial intelligence (AI), according to the notice.

The “sources sought” notice is only for eligible colleges and institutions interested in submitting proposals for financial assistance for applied research and related activities in STEM fields that support EM’s cleanup mission, according to the notice.

Eligible institutions submitting a letter of Interest will receive a request for proposal, according to the notice. Questions should be directed to Harrison or the secondary point of contact, Debbie Pope, debbie.pope@srnl.doe.gov.

Minority Serving Institutions are defined by the Department of Education as institutions of higher education enrolling populations with significant percentages of minority students, according to the notice. Savannah River is the “hub national laboratory” for the minority institution program, according to the notice..

The DOE’s Environmental Management office is stepping up efforts to diversify both its workforce and its supplier base.
