Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, which manages and operates portions of the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site wants to hire a company for an undisclosed “large capital project,” according to a notice on the federal government contracting website.
Located about 15 miles south of Aiken, South Carolina, the Savannah River Site (SRS) comprises 310 contiguous square miles and includes multiple tenants, including the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
Savannah River Nuclear Solutions “intends to utilize a third-party logistics service provider to perform material logistics support as an integral part of the supply chain for a large capital project,” the notice said.
The contractor needs firms that can provide material and equipment receiving, warehousing, inventory and tracking, protection, maintenance, transport and delivery, according to the notice.
Interested logistics service providers must provide all labor, storage facilities, materials and supplies, tools and equipment, transportation, management and supervision, permits and licenses, the notice said.
Digital tracking of stored material and equipment is also required, as is secured warehousing that can handle Level B storage capacity, which by Department of Energy (DOE) standards requires a minimum of 40 degrees Fahrenheit with a maximum of 140 degrees F or less if stipulated by the manufacturer.
DOE is also asking that the company staff up the warehouse within 75 miles of the Savannah RIver Site. Warehousing will be provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
It is unclear from the notice whether the scope of work for this contractor is related to the large plutonium pit production facility being built at Savannah River. The facility will be the largest U.S. manufacturing center for plutonium nuclear weapons triggers, putting out at least 50 pits per year sometime in the 2030s. The other 30 pits required to meet the military need for 80 pits per year to modernize the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile will be made at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
