The Nuclear Regulatory Commission this week invited four senior managers of companies decommissioning nuclear power plants to share their experiences with the commission in May at agency headquarters in Rockville, Md., near Washington.
“On May 2, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be holding a public meeting to discuss Decommissioning Lessons Learned from the past and recent decommissioning projects,” NRC wrote in its invitation. “The objective of the meeting is to share good practices and lessons learned to improve the overall decommissioning process in transitioning from operations to decommissioning to license termination.”
The last three operating nuclear power plants in Germany will shut down on April 15, Steffi Lemke, the German federal environment and consumer protection minister, said this week. Lemke, a founding member of Germany’s modern Green party, reiterated the federal government’s policy March 20 to media including the German-language public broadcaster, Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk.
Isar 2, in Essenbach, Emsland in Lower Saxony, and Neckarwestheim 2 in Baden-Württemberg all will shut down, marking the end of nuclear power generation in Europe’s largest economy.
Holtec international this week began moving spent nuclear fuel into a dry-cask storage facility the company built at the Krško Nuclear Power Plant in Slovenia, the company said this week in a press release.
Holtec won a competition to build the facility in 2017.
