Friday was to be Kathryn Huff’s last day on the job as the Department of Energy’s assistant secretary for nuclear energy.
Huff, who has led the office since 2022 and joined DOE in 2021, planned to return to academia, she wrote last month in a farewell email to colleagues.
A Southern Co. subsidiary Georgia Power has started commercial operations of the new Vogtle Unit 4 nuclear reactor in Waynesboro, Ga., the company announced in a Monday press release.
The new reactor can generate enough electricity to power about 500,000 homes and businesses, Southern said in the release.
Bechtel, which is also a Department of Energy weapons complex contractor, served as the engineering, procurement, and construction company for the new Vogtle unit, it said in its own press release.
Holtec International, Jupiter, Fla., created a new subsidiary to maintain and modify operating nuclear power plants, the company said this week.
Holtec Maintenance & Modification International will be based in Chattanooga, Tenn., and led by Christopher Bakken, the company wrote in a press release.
Jeff Sharkey joined the Washington law offices of Balch and Bingham as senior regulatory advisor, the firm said this week.
Sharkey was most recently nuclear regulatory affairs director for South Nuclear. Before that, he worked for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, including as executive policy advisor to the commissioners, according to Balch and Bingham’s press release.
