The Exchange Monitor was set to host its 18th annual RadWaste Summit in Louisville, Ky., June 3-5 at the Louisville Marriott Downtown.
The agenda for the yearly gathering of government and industry professionals features speakers from the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management, Office of Nuclear Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration.
The Republic of Korea’s legislative session ended this week before lawmakers could pass a bill to authorize construction of a nuclear waste repository in the country, the English-language Korean business-news website BusinessKorea reported Wednesday.
The bill now must be reintroduced in the 22nd session of Korea’s National Assembly, which began Thursday. Without the bill, BusinessKorea reported, citing the country’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, “it is not possible to proceed with site selection, construction, or operation of a repository to dispose of spent nuclear fuel from nuclear power plants.”
Holtec International planned to hold an informal open house about the planned reopening of the Palisades Nuclear Generating Station in Michigan, local media reported.
The open house was scheduled for June 4, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time at the Palisades Joint Information Center in Benton Harbor, Mich., according to the report by local ABC radio affiliate WSJM.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission this week appointed Scott Flanders its chief information officer, effective June 2, according to an agency press release.
Flanders had been the acting chief information officer. He will be responsible for cybersecurity, information technology support functions, data management and artificial intelligence, according to NRC’s press release.
The NRC also announced this week that it appointed Harold “Hal” Pittman its director of public affairs, replacing David Castelveter, who retired this year.
Pittman will report to NRC Chair Christopher Hanson. As director of public affairs, Pittman will “provide advice and guidance to the Chair and senior agency officials and oversee the agency’s public affairs professionals at NRC headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, and the four regional offices. He will also be responsible for the agency’s crisis communication and social media programs,” according to NRC’s press release about his appointment.
Pittman retired as a rear admiral in the Navy, where he worked in public affairs, NRC said in its release. He also worked in public affairs as a civilian for the Army and the Pentagon, NRC said. Outside of the government, Pittman has worked for Arizona Public Utilities.
