Not enough is being done to address the threat that climate change poses to the United Kingdom, according to a report issued Tuesday by the government’s advisory Committee on Climate Change (CCC). “The aim of the report is to assess the urgency of further action or research in the next five years, to help the UK and devolved governments and others prioritise their resources,” the report says.
The report lists six “urgent climate risks” that it says should be priorities for the nation: flooding and coastal change risks to communities, businesses and infrastructure; risks to health, well-being, and productivity from high temperatures; risk of shortages in the public water supply, and for agriculture, energy generation, and industry; risks to natural capital, including terrestrial, coastal, marine, and freshwater ecosystems, soils and biodiversity; risks to domestic and international food production and trade; and new and emerging pests and diseases, and invasive non-native species, affecting people, plants and animals.
