Radwaste Summit focuses on topics including remediation, weapons and clean energy

By ExchangeMonitor

Exchange Monitor’s annual Radwaste Summit kicks off today in Louisville, Ky., with presentations by representatives of federal agencies, the nuclear industry, along with state and local officials.

Monday’s sessions commence at 1 p.m. eastern time with a keynote panel on waste management initiatives and national cleanup priorities. The opening panel features Joe Heckman, the president of waste management for EnergySolutions; Associate Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy Kimberly Petry; Sylvia Saltzstein, senior manager at Sandia National Laboratories; and Duane White, branch chief with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for low-level waste projects.

Participants will hear dozens of speakers spread over three days addressing topics including decommissioning, waste storage and transportation, new nuclear reactor development, the Department of Energy’s Cleanup to Clean Energy Program, community and tribal relations, and weapons modernization at the National Nuclear Security Administration.

Weapons complex properties being highlighted this year include the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, Sandia National Laboratories and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico, as well as the Paducah Site in Kentucky and the Portsmouth Site in Ohio.

The agenda for the three-day event can be found here.
