The Environmental Protection Agency is seeking public comment on a proposed Class VI Underground Injection Control permit for a carbon sequestration injection well in Decatur, Ill. The well, which would be operated by Archer Daniels Midland, would store carbon captured during the production of ethanol at the company’s facility in Decatur. The company estimates 1.1 million metric tons of CO2 would be captured and injected into the well each year.
The Archer Daniels Midland project has fallen far behind its initial timeline due largely to delays in receiving the Class VI UIC permit. Originally the project was scheduled to begin drilling last summer but the EPA has issued several requests for additional information on the permit since receiving ADM’s application in 2011. The public comment period is currently open and will close May 30, following a public hearing to be held May 21 in Decatur.
