Stakeholders and interested parties have until March 18 to file public comments regarding the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s proposed rulemaking that will address regulatory changes for decommissioning power reactors.
Vice president of Nuclear Decommissioning at power company Entergy, Steven Scheurich, said during a phone interview Friday that the organization is working with the Nuclear Energy Institute in providing public comment to NRC.
So far the agency has received 27 comments, according to the latest information on regulations.gov. Implementation of the rulemaking is set for 2019. NRC has solicited feedback on decommissioning regulation and trust funds, among other items. The agency had initially set a Jan. 4 deadline for the public comments, but extended the timeline, partly in response to a request from members of the Vermont congressional delegation.
Scheurich described the NRC’s current process for decommissioning plants as “a little bit inefficient, would be the polite way to put it. But it’s predictable, and so there’s value in the process.”
