Procurement Starts for Construction of High Explosives Facility at Pantex

By ExchangeMonitor

Consolidated Nuclear Security is seeking a subcontractor to build the National Nuclear Security Administration’s High Explosives Science and Engineering facility at the Pantex Plan in Amarillo, Texas, according to a procurement note posted online.

The three-building High Explosives Science and Engineering facility is one part of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Primary Capability Modernization campaign to upgrade and rebuild production infrastructure for nuclear-weapon primary stages.

Burns McDonnell, Kansas City, Mo., designed the High Explosives Science and Engineering facility, which will pair with the site’s existing High Explosives Pressing Facility and its planned High Explosive Synthesis, Formulation, and Production Facility.

Interested bidders should send an expression of interest to Consolidated Nuclear Security by Feb. 12, the company wrote in the procurement note.

The NNSA is replacing the Bechtel-led Consolidated Nuclear Security as the prime contractor for both Pantex and the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and plans to begin a transition to the new contractor in June. At deadline for Weapons Complex Morning Briefing, the incumbent’s last day was scheduled to be Sept. 30.
