Preview: Consent-Based Siting

With consent-based siting now the official policy of the U.S. Department of Energy when it comes to finding storage places for spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste, attendees to a Tuesday morning session, “Consent Based Siting — Opportunities and Challenges for Siting Disposal Facilities,” will hear from experts in the public and private sector on technical, institutional, and political issues involved in engaging stakeholders in the process of securing community support for these facilities.

The panel is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to noon in Room 104AB. The speakers will be John Kotek, Acting Assistant Secretary of Nuclear Energy, U.S. Department of Energy; Betsy Madru, Vice President, Government Affairs, Waste Control Specialists; John Heaton, Energy Development Coordinator, City of Carlsbad, N.M.; James Voss, Senior Partner, Predicus LLC; Chuck Bernhard, Senior Business Development Manager, Bernhard Consulting LLC; and Bruce McKirdy, Managing Director, U.K. Radioactive Waste Management.
