PE firm scoops up another DOE small-biz contractor

By Dan Leone

Department of Energy small business contractor Boston Government Services, Oak Ridge, Tenn., was acquired in October by a private equity fund, according to someone familiar with the deal.

Bernhard Capital Partners, Baton Rouge, La., was the buyer for Boston Government Services (BGS), according to this person.

Harry Boston, founder and president of BGS, did not immediately reply to an email on Monday requesting comment and the financial terms of the transaction.

Founded in 2007, BGS is registered as a minority owned business, a self certified small disadvantaged business and black american owned, according to the federal procurement website sam.gov. The company has offices in Idaho, Ohio and New Mexico, and Washington, D.C., among other places.

According to its website, BGS has contracts at nearly every major Department of Energy nuclear weapons site, active and shuttered, and employs more than 250 “scientists, engineers and technical professionals.”

Bernhard Capital Partners, founded by Jim Bernhard, also the founder of the Shaw Group, has about $2.5 billion in assets under management, according to its LinkedIn page. The company had already dipped a toe into the DOE market earlier in 2022 when it acquired small business SE&C of Richland, Wash., a consulting house for proposal writing.
