Operator Suspended for Transporting Radioactive Material Without Proper Paperwork

By ExchangeMonitor

A motor vehicle operator temporarily lost commercial driving privileges after transporting nuclear samples needed for counterterrorism training without completing the proper paperwork.

The driver shipped the material Sept. 4 from the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Counter Terrorism Operations Support office in Nevada to a training facility in Hagerstown, Md., the Department of Energy  disclosed on Sept. 7.

The department did not identify or quantify the radioactive material transported without the required paperwork, or describe the training for which it was needed.

The agency did say the operator of the motor vehicle would not be allowed to drive commercially until DOE completes an investigation of the incident. The department did not say how long that would take.

The NNSA’s Nevada National Security Site manages some of the agency’s counterterrorism training programs. In its Friday disclosure, DOE said both the NNSA’s Nevada Field Office and the Nevada site prime contractor, the Honeywell-led Mission Support and Test Services, were notified of the improper shipment.
