Occidental Permian’s carbon sequestration monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) plan has become the first ever approved under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP), EPA announced Friday. The GHGRP has developed an accounting and monitor system to measure the amount of greenhouse gasses injected underground.
EPA’s Office and Air and Radiation’ Associate Assistant Administrator and Senior Counsel, Joseph Goffman, applauded the company for their plan in a Friday blog post. “Oxy’s plan shows that our Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program framework provides value to companies, as well as to EPA and the public, to help track how much carbon dioxide is being stored and provide confidence that the carbon dioxide remains securely underground over time,” he wrote
The Occidental Permian plan is for the company’s Denver Unit in the Wasson Field of the Permian Basin, where the company uses carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery.
