The Paris Agreement on climate change got 11 new signatories last week. Togo, Armenia, Chile, Zambia, Malawi, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Turkmenistan, and, Yemen signed the agreement during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The total number of signatories now stands at 191.
Nearly 200 nations adopted the Paris Agreement last December at the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change. The agreement opened for signature on April 22, at which time it was inked by 175 governments.
Thus far, 60 of those nations, representing 47.76 percent of global emissions, have ratified the Paris Agreement. The accord will enter into force following ratification by 55 nations representing at least 55 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. That milestone appears likely before the end of 2016.
