A federal safety review for a proposed interim storage site for spent nuclear fuel won’t be ready by the previously scheduled date, according to a recent document published by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The safety evaluation report for Holtec International’s proposed consolidated interim storage facility (CISF) was originally supposed to be finished in May but NRC won’t be able to finish it then because they don’t have enough information from the company, the agency said in a letter to the nuclear services company dated March 25.
The commission will provide Holtec with a formal request for more information in a month, the letter said. Until the company responds, the safety report is on hold and the commission won’t schedule a new completion date.
The agency’s safety evaluation report, along with its environmental impact review, are two hurdles the proposed CISF in southeastern New Mexico must clear before it gets a federal license. The commission has said that the environmental impact report won’t be done until the summer.
