With infusions of federal funding shifting industry’s focus to recapitalizing nuclear power plants from decommissioning them, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission plans next week to conduct more public comment about proposed revisions to the environmental paperwork associated with renewing reactor licenses.
The NRC in March proposed changes to the generic environmental impact statement the agency conducts whenever a reactor-license holder wants to renew its license.
The agency has billed the proposed rule change as a keeping-up-with-the-times measure that could change the way regulators consider environmental impacts that are ubiquitous, or nearly so, at any power plant seeking either its first license renewal or a subsequent renewal.
The scheduled public-comment meetings will be held in person and online. The in-person locations of the meetings are:
March 28 at the Marriott Chicago Naperville, 1801 N. Naperville Blvd. in Naperville, Illinois.
March 30 at the Marriott Dallas/Fort Worth Westlake, 1301 Solana Blvd., Building 3, in Westlake, Texas.
April 4 at the Alloy King of Prussia, 301 West DeKalb Pike in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
April 6 at the Courtyard by Marriott Atlanta Decatur Downtown/Emory, 130 Clairemont Ave. in Decatur, Georgia.
Public comments about the proposed rule are due May 2, the NRC said. Those interested in attending meetings virtually can sign up at NRC’s website.
