The Nuclear Regulatory Commission appointed two new members to its reactor safety board this week, the agency announced.
Vicki Bier, and Gregory Halnon joined the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) April 12, NRC said in a Monday press release. They will both serve four-year terms on the panel.
In addition to her new role on the committee, Bier is a professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison in the engineering physics and the industrial and systems engineering departments. She has previously served on other government advisory boards, including the Radiation Advisory Committee and the Homeland Security Advisory Committee of the Science Advisory Board for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Halnon, for his part, is an independent nuclear industry consultant. He has prior experience working in leadership roles at nuclear power plants — including at the soon-to-be-decommissioned Three Mile Island Unit 2 reactor.
The ACRS is an independent advisory committee separate from the larger commission. The expert panel advises staff on “safety rules and issues related to the licensing and operation of nuclear power plants, health physics and radiation protection,” according to the press release.
