The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled a July 23 meeting in Harrisburg, Pa., to discuss Exelon’s approach for decommissioning the Three Mile Island Unit 1 nuclear power reactor.
The Chicago-based power company is scheduled by Sept. 30 to retire the pressurized-water reactor near the state capital. In a post-shutdown decommissioning activities report (PSDAR) submitted to the NRC in April, Exelon said it plans to place the facility into safe-storage (SAFSTOR) mode until August 2073. That would be followed by preparations for decommissioning to February 2075, with decommissioning to license termination by September 2079. Site restoration would wrap up two years after that.
Radiological decommissioning is estimated to cost just over $1 billion, plus nearly $159 million for management of the plant’s spent fuel, and $86 million for site restoration.
The public meeting on the PSDAR is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel, 4650 Lindle Road in Harrisburg.

The NRC has also scheduled a webinar for 1 p.m. Tuesday “to provide key facts about the decommissioning process and how the NRC regulates such activities through on-site inspections and other reviews,” according to an agency announcement. Registration is required for the webinar.
