The Nuclear Regulatory Commission noted a minor violation regarding construction of the Mixed Fuel Fabrication Facility in its latest quarterly inspection report, posted Friday. Contractor Shaw AREVA MOX Services failed to meet “MOX Project Quality Assurance Plan requirements for welding of safety-related ventilation ductwork,” according to a Feb. 14 letter from the NRC to the contractor. The severity level IV violation is the NRC’s lowest-level violation. In an accompanying notice of violation, the NRC states that “MOX Services failed to identify that they had not achieved the specified requirement of through-wall [complete joint peneteration… by not inspecting the internal portion of two field welds on [quality level one] stainless steel ductwork for the [high depressurization exhaust] System. The two field welds had rejectable, internal root passes with incomplete joint penetration.”
MOX Services has addressed the issue, President Kelly Trice said in a statement. “The issue identified in the report was related to welding inspections of ventilation ducts. Our inspection process has been modified to ensure appropriate inspection of duct welds and corrective actions are being implemented to ensure all welding is in full compliance with our NRC Construction Authorization," he said. “As an example of our continuing commitment to safety, the MOX project recently achieved a new safety record by surpassing 14 million consecutive safe work hours without a lost workday due to injury.”
