The Nuclear Regulatory Commission this week tapped its deputy chief of nuclear security to head up the office responsible for enforcing agency regulations, the agency announced this week.
Mark Lombard, who had been in second-in-command at NRC’s Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response, will take over at the commission’s Office of Enforcement on June 5, the Thursday press release said. Lombard is also the agency’s COVID-19 task force lead.
In his new role, Lombard will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of “policies and programs that enforce NRC requirements,” the press release said. Where nuclear waste is concerned, the enforcement office ensures regulatory compliance for agency licensees that store and transport spent fuel.
Lombard started as the nuclear security office’s deputy director in 2006. He joined the agency in 2003 as a senior security specialist, NRC’s Thursday press release said.
