NRC Very Low-Level Waste Scoping Study Due April, Agency Says

By ExchangeMonitor

A Nuclear Regulatory Commission study recommending updates for disposal of very low-level radioactive waste is scheduled to wrap up this spring, a Nuclear Regulatory Commission staffer said this week.

The commission’s very low-level waste (VLLW) scoping study is supposed to finish up in April, Stephen Koenick, NRC low-level waste project chief, said Wednesday in a panel discussion at the annual Waste Management Symposium.

This development comes after the commission withdrew in December their proposed interpretation of their VLLW regulations that would have removed extra regulatory barriers for some recipients of very-low level waste.

The scoping study, commissioned in 2018, got stuck in development limbo a year later when the agency paused the study to consider other approaches for updated VLLW regulations.
