The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled a meeting Thursday to discuss a reversion to the license termination plan for the shuttered La Crosse Boiling Water Reactor power plant in Wisconsin before it is submitted to NRC staff.
La Crosse closed in 1987 and has been in SAFSTOR status since 1991, aside from a period of active decommissioning between 2012 and 2014. Plant operator Dairyland Power Cooperative in June transferred the reactor license to LaCrosseSolutions, a subsidiary of waste specialist EnergySolutions, which is leading final decommissioning.
Decommissioning is expected to wrap up in 2018, though LaCrosseSolutions says it is now looking at a 2020 end date. A cost estimate from March 2013 put the price tag to complete decommissioning at $90.7 million in 2013 dollars.
The meeting is scheduled at NRC headquarters in Rockville, Md. From 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
