NRC to Hold Briefing on Decommissioning Rule

By ExchangeMonitor

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled a briefing on its power reactor decommissioning rulemaking for 9 a.m. Tuesday in Rockville, Md.

The commission has directed its staff to by 2019 complete a decommissioning rulemaking in an effort to improve the regulatory framework for decommissioning power plants. The public comment period for the rulemaking is open through Friday.

In the rulemaking effort, NRC hopes to make the decommissioning process more efficient; reduce the need for exemptions from current regulations; and increase regulation openness, clarity, and reliability.

NRC is scheduled to issue a draft regulatory basis for public comment in December 2016, followed by a final regulatory basis in fall 2017. The proposed rule is expected for publication in summer 2018, opening the process to public comment again ahead of issuance of a final rule in 2019.
