The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced this week that it was giving out cash awards to academic institutions focusing on nuclear science and engineering, according to a press release.
30 four-year universities, trade schools, community colleges and other institutions were part of NRC’s $10.7 million grant award, the agency said in a press release Tuesday. The commission is giving out seven undergraduate scholarships, one trade scholarship, 11 graduate fellowships, and 11 faculty development awards.
Among the institutions getting a cash prize from NRC is the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign — where recently-named acting Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Kathryn Huff was an assistant professor in the department of nuclear, plasma and radiological engineering prior to her appointment to the No. 2 slot at the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy. Urbana-Champaign’s nuclear engineering department has doubled in size since 2011 thanks to NRC grants, the commission said in its press release.
NRC has been giving out academic grants since 2009, the press release said. Since the start of the program the agency has awarded 546 grants with a value of more that $177 million.
