Northrop Reports $6B in Sales, $517M in Earnings for 2Q

By Alissa Tabirian

Northrop Grumman on Wednesday reported $6 billion in sales in the second quarter of 2016, a 2 percent year-over-year increase, along with $517 million in net earnings, down from $531 million in the same period of 2015. The company also reported a 2 percent decline in operating income from the second quarter of 2015 to that of 2016.

Northrop Grumman is the lead partner for National Security Technologies (NSTec), the management and operations contractor at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Its teammates are AECOM, CH2M, and BWX Technologies.

NSTec supports the National Nuclear Security Administration through nuclear stockpile stewardship, emergency response to nuclear and radiological incidents, nonproliferation activities, dirty bomb detection, and counterterrorism training. NNSS also performs high-hazard operations for the NNSA and other agencies.

Northrop’s contribution at NNSS falls under the company’s Technology Services business segment. This division’s sales decreased by 2 percent year over year for the second quarter, from $1.24 billion in 2015 to $1.21 billion in 2016.

Northrop attributed the segment’s decreased sales to “lower volume for Advanced Defense Services programs, partially offset by higher volume on Global Logistics and Modernization programs.”

“Advanced Defense Services sales declined primarily due to several program completions in 2015,” Northrop said in its earnings announcement. “The increase in Global Logistics and Modernization sales reflects higher volume on the KC-10 [jet aircraft] program, partially offset by lower volume on the ICBM program.”

The segment’s operating income increased by 2.3 percent to $131 million during the same time frame, which Northrop attributed to “improved performance.”

NSTec this month celebrated 10 years of service at NNSS.
