North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he would increase the country’s nuclear arsenal to prepare for potential combat with the U.S. and its allies, state media said Tuesday.
In a speech Monday, marking the 76th anniversary of the founding of the government of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Jong Un said the “reckless expansion” of the U.S.’s nuclear arsenal presents a “grave threat” to North Korea.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, Jong Un said DPRK would “redouble its measures and efforts to make all the armed forces of the state including the nuclear force fully ready for combat.”
This announcement from Jong Un comes after U.S. President Joe Biden (D) reportedly approved a new nuclear strategy in March for the U.S. that would account for the trajectory of “adversary arsenals,” including that of Russia, China and North korea. That document may become declassified by the end of Biden’s term.
