Nomination hearing for NRC nominee scheduled for next week

By ExchangeMonitor

A Senate committee on Sept. 11 will hold a hearing to consider the nomination of Senate staffer and nuclear engineer Matthew Marzano to fill the last open slot on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, where Marzano is currently detailed as an advisor from the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory, planned to hold the hearing at 10:00 a.m. Eastern time in room 406 of the Senate Dirksen Office Building, according to a Wednesday press release from the committee.

The committee planned to stream the hearing on its website.

President Joe Biden (D) in July nominated Marzano to be a member of the NRC.

Retiring Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee, has said he supports Marzano’s nomination.

If confirmed, Marzano, who has a masters degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Florida, would be the only nuclear engineer on the five-person commission. His term would expire June 30, 2028.
