In the midst of a winter weather emergency that left millions without power and caused a nuclear plant to shut down in the Lone Star State, Waste Control Specialists’ waste storage site experienced no problems, the president of the company said this week.
David Carlson, president and chief operating officer of WCS told RadWaste Monitor in an emailed statement Friday that “despite the challenging weather and power outages that occurred earlier this week, the WCS site is operational and safely receiving shipments for disposal.”
A representative for the 1,338-acre storage facility in Andrews County, Texas told RadWaste Monitor in an email Wednesday that the site was having “no issues” related to the current weather conditions.
As of Friday morning, state power grid manager Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) plans to return to normal operating conditions, they said in a statement. On Wednesday, ERCOT said in a Tweet that 2.7 million Texans were without power.
Meanwhile, South Texas Project Electric Generating Station’s Unit 1 reactor shut down on Feb. 15, but came back online Wednesday evening, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said in a tweet.
