Alice Williams, the No. 3 official in the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management, announced yesterday plans to retire from federal service effective Jan. 2, 2014. Williams has served as EM Associate Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary since late 2011, when the position was created as part of a reorganization of EM carried out by current DOE cleanup chief David Huizenga. The position of associate principal deputy assistant secretary oversees EM’s three “mission units,” which cover site restoration; tank waste and nuclear material; and waste management. “After several weeks and months of thought, my husband Tom and I have decided to end our federal careers on January 2,” Williams said in a message to EM employees. “This has not been an easy decision. But now that we have made it, we are looking forward to the next chapter of our lives. In the meantime, I will continue to be an engaged member of EM’s leadership, and help lay the groundwork for upcoming decisions that will allow EM to continue to make progress towards cleaning up the cold war legacy.”
