NNSA’s nuclear couriers to get new rolling armory, technician trailer

By Dan Parsons

The National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Secure Transport, which is responsible for moving nuclear material and weapons between secure sites around the country, is buying two new logistics support trailers to aid federal agents in that mission.

Trailer Technologies Holdings, based in Albuquerque, N.M., received a sole-source, firm-fixed-price contract to build the two trailers for the NNSA’s Office of Secure Transport (OST), according to a contract announcement on the federal government’s contracting website. The announcement did not list the contract’s value.

OST agents are responsible for the safe and secure transportation of nuclear weapons, special nuclear materials, and weapons components/assemblies between production facilities and Department of Defense facilities using specialized tractor-trailer trucks and aircraft.

Trailer Technologies will build two new logistical support trailers, one of which will be a dedicated rolling armory. Its interior will include secure firearms vaults, armorer work benches, a window through which OST agents outside the trailer can retrieve weapons from an armorer inside, and an intrusion detection alarm system, according to the notice.

The other logistic support trailer will be used by the OST automated target systems technicians. That trailer will be outfitted with equipment storage space, spare parts bins, technician workbenches, and an electrical system to support the simultaneous charging of multiple banks of rechargeable batteries that are required to power OST’s target systems.

These logistic trailers are similar in appearance to NASCAR pit-crew maintenance trailers, the notice said. They are 53-foot-long trailers containing equipment and supplies storage areas and workbenches/work areas for training support staff.

Trailer Technologies was the only manufacturer found during market research to offer steel-frame construction, which “lends itself to easier future technology refreshes and trailer remodels,” the notice said. Trailer Technologies Holdings LLC was also the only custom trailer manufacturer with multiple – more than 100 – authorized service centers across the country.

“OST has experienced issues in the past with redesign and technology upgrades in its aluminum-based trailers as seemingly simple generator and A/C replacements have required the return of LST to their point of manufacturing and required significant electrical and air ductwork rework within.”

NNSA does not intend to solicit any other bids for this work, but any company that believes it can meet the requirement is asked to send notice by June 9 to [email protected].
