With the National Nuclear Security Administration’s combined Y-12/Pantex M&O procurement in full swing, Patty Wagner, the chair of the Source Evaluation Board for the procurement and the manager of the agency’s Sandia Site Office, said she will retire early next month, according to a message yesterday to SSO employees. Wagner, who shepherded the procurement over the last 3 ½ years through the release of a final Request for Proposals for the contract in December, said in her message that her retirement will take effect Feb. 3. Robert Scott, the deputy chair of the SEB, will take over as the SEB chair, while Sandia Site Office Deputy Manager Rich Sena will serve as the acting head of the site office until Wagner’s permanent replacement is selected.
In an interview with NW&M Monitor yesterday, Wagner called her decision to retire a “personal” matter that had been in the works for some time. She said she had hoped to retire when she reached 30 years of government service (Nov. 28, 2010), and when delays in the Y-12/Pantex procurement pushed those plans back, she said she committed to NNSA senior management to stay through the release of the final RFP in December. She said she was confident her existing team, led by Scott, could successfully complete the procurement. “I know what I am leaving in terms of the team. It’s a personal decision,” she said. “I think my legacy will be that I put together a contract that is really transformational for NNSA and helps transform NNSA for where they’re trying to go.” Wagner took over as the Sandia Site Office manager in 2004 and is the longest tenured of the NNSA’s field chiefs. She took over as the head of the agency’s Acquisition Strategy Team in September of 2008. Wagner did not reveal her future plans, but said in the message to employees that she planned to remain in the Albuquerque, N.M., area after her retirement.
