NNSA Picks Up Four New COVID-19 Cases for the Week

By Dan Leone

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) picked up four new confirmed cases of COVID-19 this week, bringing the nuclear-weapon agency’s total to 529 since the confirmed beginning of the U.S. outbreak, a spokesperson said Friday.

So far, 416 people among the agency’s federal employees and contractors have recovered from their bouts with the disease caused by the novel coronavirus that broke out in Wuhan, China, last year. Two workers had died of the disease at deadline: one at the Y-12 National Security Site in Oak Ridge, Tenn., another at the Nevada National Security Site.

The Department of Energy branch’s weapons production sites, Y-12, the Kansas City National Security Campus in Kansas City, Mo., and the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas, all were in a status the NNSA calls “normal operations with maximum teleworking.” Normal operations does not signify a minimum percentage or number of people allowed on-site, but rather that both people working directly on the highest-priority nuclear weapons mission and people working on site-support contracts may come to work. Those who can telework, meanwhile, are allowed, but not required, to do so.

National Laboratories Cases

Following are the numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases at NNSA nuclear weapons labs, and increases relative to the prior week, as reported Friday.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory:

Cases: 53 (+1). Livermore is the only lab that does not test its own employees. Last week, the lab briefly had no active cases among its employees. The case reported Friday spoils that streak.

Los Alamos National Laboratory:

Cases: 54 (+2); 44 recovered.

Internal tests: 4,528 (+360).

Teleworking: Roughly 50% of all employees.

Cases in NNSA Host Regions

Following is Nuclear Security & Deterrence Monitor’s weekly digest of confirmed COVID-19 cases, including fatal cases, in the host cities and counties of NNSA nuclear weapons sites. The figures below are based on cumulative cases recorded since the first confirmed U.S. instance of COVID-19 in January.

Data come from a tracker maintained by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and from select states, counties, and cities, where noted.

The Monitor tracks weekly changes, using the latest data available at deadline, which is sometimes current as of the Thursday before publication.
