The National Nuclear Security Administration on Tuesday said it had added 10,000 square feet of manufacturing capacity for electronic parts at its Kansas City, Mo., National Security Complex (KCNSC), under budget and ahead of schedule.
The facility produces electronics and other non-nuclear parts for the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
The new space is converted “White Space” at the facility, essentially spare, unused room intended to provide flexibility if the plant needs to add or change its operational capacity or capabilities, KCNSC spokeswoman Shaunda Parks said by email. The modificaitions, including expanded utilities and HVAC systems, in total cost $3.6 million and took six months to complete. That was roughly $500,000 less than projected and two weeks sooner than anticipated, according to an NNSA press release.
The project boosted the plant’s electronics production capacity by 10 percent, according to Parks.
“This project supports the needed near term infrastructure investments to achieve planning and production goals of the B61-12 LEP, W88 ALT 370, and W87 AFA,” the release says.
