The National Nuclear Security Administration has extended the existing contracts of Babcock & Wilcox-led teams at Y-12 and Pantex through the end of July, giving the agency time to seek additional cost savings information from teams bidding for the combined management and operating contract of both sites. The contracts at the sites had previously been extended through May 31, but the agency’s latest decision appears to hint at a timeline for its efforts to resolve concerns raised when the Government Accountability Office upheld protests of the NNSA’s selection of Bechtel-led Consolidated Nuclear Security in January. When the NNSA announced May 8 that it would seek more information from bidders, acting Administrator Neile Miller said the agency was hoping to wrap up the procurement “as quickly as possible,” adding: “We think we can get this done and move along expeditiously.”
