NNSA Extends BWXT Contract for Enriched Uranium Scrap Processing

By Alissa Tabirian

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) plans to extend for 26 months a contract to BWX Technologies’ Nuclear Operations Group to process enriched uranium scrap for the NNSA Production Office at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Tennessee, according to a notice posted Wednesday.

The agency determined that BWXT is the “only known non-governmental U.S. entity that has demonstrated ability to perform the required uranium scrap processing,” according to the notice of intent to award a sole source modification.

During the extension period, the contractor will be given up to 513 kilograms of enriched uranium scrap, which it will then chemically process to recover the uranium, purify and convert the material to a certain chemical specification, and prepare it to be shipped to the Department of Energy, the notice said. Two metric tons of enriched uranium will remain the maximum amount of scrap material to be processed under the contract, it said.

A BWXT spokesman declined to comment on details of the modification, noting the prospective contract update is in the proposal stage.

Other interested contractors may submit a notification of interest and capability statement for NNSA consideration by noon Eastern time on June 23 via www.fedconnect.net.
