In an effort to mirror the relationship between National Nuclear Security Administration weapons laboratories and their United Kingdom counterparts, the agency’s weapons program has created a liaison between the agency’s production plants and the UK’s Atomic Weapons Establishment, filling the position with former Y-12 National Security Complex and headquarters official Brenda Hunter. According to the agency, Hunter will provide oversight of technical exchanges between AWE and the NNSA weapons complex as an advisor to the Office of Defense Programs’ Assistant Deputy Administrator for Stockpile Management.
Don Cook served as the head of the Atomic Weapons Establishment before becoming the NNSA’s Defense Programs chief in 2010, and in a statement, he said the new position would “help strengthen the relationship between the plants and will help ensure that the plants are participating in various reviews and programs. It is important the U.S. maintains positive relationships with the U.K. while implementing President Obama’s nuclear security agenda.” Hunter previously served as a science advisor within the Office of Defense Programs and also was Y-12’s headquarters liaison. She was also the director of internal audit at Y-12 and the vice president of internal audit and ethics for the Yucca Mountain Project.
