On Monday, 14 workers at the Department of Energy’s Hanford Site in Washington state informed management they have tested positive for COVID-19.
That is according to a bulletin posted on a DOE Hanford operations website run by the Leidos-led Mission Support Alliance.
The latest batch of positive tests brings the total number of COVID-19 cases at the former plutonium production facility to more than 565 since the pandemic began in the United States early in 2020.
As of Dec. 31, there were 431 active cases of COVID-19 at properties run by the DOE Office of Environmental Management, a spokesperson said last week. The figure was the second-highest weekly number of coronavirus infections at the cleanup complex during 2020, second only to the 477 active cases reported the week of Dec. 10.
The pandemic continues to take its toll. As of this morning the United States has confirmed more than 20.8 million cases of the illness with more than 353,000 deaths, according to an online virus tracker run by Johns Hopkins University.
