This week marks the end of a mandatory waiting window for the Texas A&M University’s Board of Regents to officially approve Katherine Banks, dean of the College of Engineering and vice chancellor of engineering and national laboratories, as the system’s next president.
At deadline Tuesday for Weapons Complex Morning Briefing, the board of regents was scheduled to meet next during the week of May 17, according to the board’s website.
Texas A&M is one of the three main partners in Triad National Security, management and operations contractor for the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and an affiliate of Lawrence Livermore National Security, the prime for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The system also has an office at the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas.
On March 3, John Junkins, the interim Texas A&M president, announced Banks was the sole finalist to succeed Michael Young, who took a slightly early retirement last year. Young, a law professor and level 1 CrossFit trainer, according to his curriculum vitae, had been president for about five years when he stepped down.
Texas law requires the regents to wait at least 21 days before formalizing Banks’ appointment, Junkins wrote in his announcement to all Aggies earlier this month.
