The New Mexico Environment Department will kick off the first in a series of public outreach meetings a week from today with a discussion of its oversight of the Energy Department’s Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
The July 9 meeting will focus on the mission of the state agency’s Energy Department Oversight Bureau, and possible relocation of its Los Alamos field office.
The NMED oversight bureau assesses operations at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. The bureau, financed through an Energy Department grant, focuses on potential contaminant levels of heavy metals, organic and inorganic compounds, and radionuclides around the federal nuclear facilities in the state.
The New Mexico Environment Department is actively searching for a new Los Alamos County location through the state procurement process, state Environment Secretary James Kenney said in a Friday news release. The address of the current office is listed as Diamond Drive.
The meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. local time at the Pajarito Room of the Fuller Lodge, 2132 Central Ave. in Los Alamos.
Anyone needing assistance at the meeting should contact Department of Energy Oversight Bureau Chief Susan Lucas Kamat, at [email protected].
