Two new contractors, for Central Plateau remediation and site services, took charge this week at the Hanford Site in Washington state.
Sunday was the end of the transition period and today marked the first Monday on the job for both Central Plateau Cleanup Co. as well as Hanford Mission Integration Solutions.
Central Plateau is composed of Amentum, Fluor and Atkins and replaces Jacobs subsidiary CH2M Plateau Remediation as the lead contractor on the Central Plateau’s mostly solid waste cleanup. Hanford Mission Integration Solutions is made up of Leidos, Centerra and Parsons Government Services and it replaces another Leidos-led entity, Mission Support Alliance.
Both multibillion-dollar contracts were awarded by the DOE in December 2019. Both were subsequently challenged, unsuccessfully, with the Government Accountability Office. But as COVID-19 raged across the DOE cleanup complex, the Office of Environmental Management held off on giving the teams notice to proceed until Oct. 5.
The pact Central Plateau is potentially worth $10 billion over 10 years. The work includes protecting the Columbia River from contamination along with deactivation, decommissioning and demolition of old facilities. The new contractor has more than 1,800 employees, a spokesperson for the contractor said by email Thursday.
As for the departing contractor, CH2M, issued a statement Wednesday on LinkedIn the end of its agreement and saying that its website will be discontinued on Feb. 4. “Our workers made significant cleanup progress and will continue to do so as the new contractor, Central Plateau Cleanup.”
The site services deal is potentially worth $4 billion over 10 years if all options are exercised. The work tasks include upkeep of roads, security, information management, recordkeeping and running the Hammer Federal Training Center.
Scott Sax is president and project manager of Central Plateau Clean. Robert Wilkinson is president and general manager of Hanford Mission Integration Solutions. Wilkinson also served as president of the outgoing contractor, Mission Support Alliance.
