A weekend wildland fire that threatened thousands of acres at the Department of Energy’s Nevada National Security Site is 100% contained, site management said in a social media post Sunday.
Fire and rescue teams for the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) “have achieved 100% containment of the Ribbon Fire,” according to a Sunday post on X, formerly Twitter. “No facilities were damaged by the fire, and no injuries were sustained by any NNSS personnel.”
Smoke from the fire was first reported about 3 p.m. Pacific Time on Thursday, Aug. 22, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) said via its Nevada website on Friday.
NNSA initially said the wildland blaze dubbed the Ribbon Fire affected about 9,000 acres on the northern portion of the weapons site. In subsequent posts, NNSA reduced its estimate to less than 8,000 acres.
In addition to bulldozers and firefighting on the ground, NNSA received help from U.S. Bureau of Land Management aerial water drops, according to the social media posts.
NNSS management said radiological monitoring teams were deployed to the burned area and had negative findings, according to the X posts.
