Nevada Monitoring Air Quality Following Beatty LLW Landfill Fire

By ExchangeMonitor
Following a fire near the US Ecology’s Beatty, Nev. hazardous waste facility over the past two days, Nevada state officials are monitoring air quality as the state watches for potential consequences from the now extinguished blaze. A fire broke out on Sunday afternoon in an industrial area near Beatty at the landfill that used to accept low-level radioactive waste, according to local reports. The facility stopped accepting the waste in the 1980’s, but the fire still could still cause problems, state officials said. “I have directed state agencies to mobilize resources and continue working with local authorities. Our top priority is the health and safety of Nevadans and those travelling near the incident site,” Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval (R) said in a statement. The fire has since been extinguished, but officials do not yet have a cause. US Ecology did not return calls for comment.
