Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) will return to Congress as a Democratic voice in a Republican-controlled Senate after the Associated Press called her reelection race on Nov. 10.
Rosen’s win gives Democrats 47 seats in the Senate. Republicans will control the chamber with 53 votes.
If Rosen keeps her spot on the Senate Armed Services Committee, she will remain as a voice for the Nevada National Security Site during annual National Defense Authorization Act negotiations.
As a member of the Armed Services Committee, Rosen would also get the chance to cross examine any of President-elect Donald Trump’s presidential appointments that the Republican controlled Senate decides to subject to the body’s advice and consent.
Incoming Senate Majority Leader Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) said he was open to letting the Senate recess so that Trump could appoint people to high-level positions in the administration without a Senate vote.
Rosen’s victory, more than a week after election day, over Republican challenger Sam Brown came by a much narrower margin than polls predicted. Some late-in-the-race polls showed Rosen with an advantage of five percent or more, according to the website 538, which aggregates polling data ahead of U.S. elections.
