NEVADA COUNTERS NYE COUNTY SUPPORT FOR YUCCA MOUNTAIN

By ExchangeMonitor

Nevada’s governor sent a letter to Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu yesterday rejecting Nye County’s recent declaration of support for the Yucca Mountain repository. “There should be no uncertainty or misunderstanding of my position with regard to an interim spent fuel storage site or repository site in Nevada; the state of Nevada does not support the location of any such site within the state and will oppose any attempt to either resurrect the defunct Yucca Mountain project or locate an interim storage facility at Yucca or elsewhere in Nevada,” Gov. Brian Sandoval (R) wrote in the letter to Chu. Last week officials from Nye County, the home of the Yucca Mountain site, sent a letter to Chu emphasizing the support for a nuclear waste repository in that community. But Sandoval stressed this week that “Nye County does not and cannot speak for the state of Nevada.”
