NETL Announces $6.7 Million in Available Carbon Utilization Research Funding

By ExchangeMonitor

The Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory has $6.7 million in federal funds available for carbon utilization research projects. “The [funding opportunity announcement] objective is to secure applications that will support the Carbon Storage program’s efforts to develop technologies that utilize CO2 from coal-fired power plants as a reactant to produce useful products without generating additional CO2 or greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions validated via a product life cycle analysis (LCA),” the NETL FOA says.

NETL is seeking up to eight projects in three interest areas: biological-based concepts for beneficial use of CO2; mineralization concepts using CO2 with industrial wastes; and novel physical and chemical processes for beneficial use of carbon.

Selected projects are expected to come from some mix of the three categories. No more than six of the eight selected projects will be awarded in either of the first two categories, though all eight may be awarded in the last.

Individual projects in the first and second and interest areas may receive up to $1.25 million each. Individual projects selected in the last category will receive no more than $1 million each. Applicants in all interest areas will be required to pay a minimum of 20 percent of the total project costs.

“DOE anticipates making awards with an estimated project period of 24 to 36 months. It is expected that projects shall be comprised of multiple budget periods defined by logical termination points of project activities and not to exceed 18 months in duration,” according to the FOA.

Interested parties can apply for this funding at www.grants.gov.
