The United Kingdom’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority yesterday awarded a five year extension to URS-led UK Nuclear Waste Management to manage the National Low Level Waste Repository in West Cumbria and to develop and implement a national LLW strategy. The contractor, which in addition to URS includes Studsvik UK, AREVA and Serco, took over in 2008 and since then has realized £30 million in cost savings, extended the life of the LLW facilit and reduced the volume of waste sent to the repository by a factor of three, according to an NDA release. “We’ve seen a consistent level of good performance both at the Low Level Waste Repository itself and across the broader low level waste management agenda. For those reasons we have taken the encouraging decision to let UKNWM continue with their oversight of LLWR Ltd for the next five years,” NDA CEO John Clarke said in a statement.
