Navarro Research and Engineering, Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Deep Isolation, Berkeley, Calif., said they formed a “strategic partnership” to help demonstrate disposal of nuclear waste in deep boreholes.
“Navarro will provide engineering, environmental and technical support, and nuclear safety expertise,” reads a joint press release dated May 2024.
Founded in 2016, Deep Isolation is trying to commercialize deep-underground horizontal drill holes as a means of storing nuclear waste. Most of the current U.S. waste inventory from power plants would have to be repackaged to be disposed of this way.
NAC International is Deep Isolation’s “lead investor,” according to the company’s website.
