The lack of a final disposition path for U.S. spent nuclear fuel may be hindering U.S. nonproliferation efforts, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz suggested yesterday. In remarks at this year’s American Nuclear Society winter meeting, held in Washington, Moniz said that the United States’ current lack of a final disposal plan for spent fuel constrained the country’s ability to offer a fuel leasing program to other countries to persuade them not to pursue enrichment and reprocessing technologies. While the amount of waste that would be returned to the United States through any such program is expected to be “very small” through at least mid-century, the United States cannot currently accommodate such waste from other counties, Moniz said.
